Poetry for Children
On Wednesday 15th June 2011 Wenlock Poetry Festival sponsored a day of poetry in Much Wenlock Primary School when Andrew Fusek Peters, a local poet, inspired the collected children and adults alike. Gathered together for the first hour were the eldest pupils, mostly year 6, from Barrow, Cressage and Much Wenlock Primary Schools. Andrew has been performing in schools for over 25 years, and we were pleased to see that he is still at the top of his game. In fact, after an hour’s wild, funny and thought provoking entertainment that made us laugh… and almost cry... we nearly ran out of superlatives.
After a successful book signing Andrew spent the rest of the morning leading a workshop on writing poetry with the top class of Much Wenlock Primary School. In the afternoon he moved onto Christchurch Primary School, Cressage for another workshop with the children there. The Head Teachers from both Cressage and Much Wenlock Primary Schools felt that the children really enjoyed and benefitted from both aspects to the day.
It is hoped that Wenlock Poetry Festival will continue to work with all eight local primary schools that are feeder schools for William Brookes School as well as with WBS itself, enabling poetry to become more available to all pupils of school age in the area.
Watch this space for the next visiting poet!
